Birthplace: New Orleans,LA  (1911-1972)

When Mahalia was only five years old she was already singing in her church choir.  She was given the nickname "The Little Firl with the Big Voice."  As she grew up the deep rich quality of her voice would bring many to tears when they heard her sing. Especially when she sant the African American Spirituals that were handed down from generation to generation by slaves.

At the age of 16 Mahalia left home and traveled to Chicago and began her formal singing career. In 1946 her recording of "Move On Up A Little Higher" hurtled her to national notarity.  She appeared in concerts all over the United states and made several internation appearences in the 1950.  her tours made her an internation star.  In the 1960's she devoted her voice and her speaking talents to the cause of Civil Rights, singing out for equal rights for all African Americans.
