Bessie Coleman

Birthplace: Atlanta, GA.   (1893-19260

Pilot

In 1922, Bessie Coleman received her p;ilot's license.  she became the first African American woman pilot.

Coleman traveled to Europe to get her training as a pilot and her license because when she tried to enroll in flying classes in the United States she was denied for two reasons, she was black and a woman.  She remain in Europe until she gained her pilot's license then she returned to the united States.

Upon returning home to the states, she flew in air shows and exhibitions all over the country.  Her perfromances at these air shows inspired young African Americans and made then eager to learn to fly. 

Dduring a flying exhibition in Jackson, Florida, she put her plan into a nose dive and was unable to come out of it.  coleman died in that accident, just four years after becoming a full-fledged pilot.
