Chestnut Stuffing (Dressing)

This is an old fashioned favorite recipe for stuffing for the Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey.

Ingredients:

  • boiling water
  • 1 1/2 lb chestnuts
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/2 tsp. thyme
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk, scalded

Directions:

Pour boiling water over chestnuts and let stand 5 minutes. Remove the skin with a knife and your fingers. Cook the nuts about 1/2 hour in boiling salted water. Drain, mash and add butter and seasonings. Pour milk over crumbs and add to nut mixture. Mix well.

This recipe can be made in the pan or stuffed in the holiday turkey.  Both methods are described below.

To Stuff a turkey:  Fill main turkey cavity and neck cavity with stuffing. Bake remaining dressing .

To Bake in the Pan: Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 15 x 10 inch baking dish. Transfer stuffing to prepared dish. Cover with buttered foil and bake until heated through, about 45 minutes. Uncover and bake until top is golden brown, about 15 minutes.
