Royal Icing

 

Ingredients

  • 3 large egg whites
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 (16-ounce) package powdered suar, sifted
  • Red and green paste food coloring (optional)

Directions

Combine egg white ( at room temperature) and cream of tartar in a large mixing bowl.  Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer until frothy.  Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing well.  Beat 5 to 7 minutes.  Color portions of icing with paste food coloring, if desired.

Prepare decorating bags, and decorate as desired. (Icing dried very quickly; keep covered at all times with plastic wrap. 

Yields about 2 cups

Note:  Royal icing dried very hards and is used for makeing deocrations to lalst indefinately.  It is edible, but crunchy.  Most cookies are decorated with Royal Icing.
