Velvet Rose Pillow

Add a touch of romance to your decor with this rose-strewn pillow!

Materials:

½ yd. velvet
Matching thread
Fiberloft Premium Poly Stuffing

Tools
Sewing machine & basic sewing supplies

Directions:

Cut 2 strips of fabric 3"x45". Fold 1 strip in half (1½"x45"). At one end, start rolling tightly 3 to 4 turns. Stitch with needle & thread to secure roll. From the secured roll, start gathering closely along the same edge using ¼" running stitches. As you sew, gather as tightly as you can without breaking the thread; secure every few gathers.

You should end up with a piece approx. 20". When you get to the last 1", fold to the inside ¼" so the raw edge will be to the inside; continue gathering. Secure stitch at end & whipstitch the folded edge. Fold second strip to the inside ¼" to hide raw edge, whipstitch closed & secure stitch. Gather along the bottom edge & repeat as you did the first one to the end.  Use a dinner plate that measures approx. 9"-11" as template & cut 2 pieces of velvet.

Sew pillow with right sides together (½" seam allowance). Leave a 6" opening. Clip seam allowance every 1" to make the seam lie flat. Turn right sides out. Finger press to shape round pillow.

Find the center of pillow & mark with straight pin. With the first strip that has the roll, start to form the rose by loosely wrapping the gathered edge around the bud. This should be loose enough that the rose will lie flat. Position the bud in the center of pillow where the pin is marked.

Pin in place & start stitching with needle at the bud & continue tacking on the gathered edge every 1". Once this is done, add the other strip overlapping slightly. Continue tacking this to the pillow in the same fashion.

Stuff pillow with fiberfill. Turn raw edges to inside & whipstitch closed.

Approximate Crafting Time: 2 hrs.
Skill Level: Some sewing experience helpful.
