Childhood Eating Problems

When it is a problem:

  1. Your child is a picy eater and refuses to eat food that is good for him or her
  2. Your child is very concerned about his or her weight when he/her does not have a weight problem.
  3. Your child hides food.
  4. Your child eats too much and is gaining weight.

Solution:

  1. Do not repeatedly comment about your child's eating habits but instead establish eating expectations and praise or reward your child when he/she meets your expectations.
  2. Do not make seperate meals.Consider your child's food preferences when cooking and include some healthy foods in the menu that he/she will eat.
  3. Limit the number of snacks that your child can eat.
  4. If your child is unncessarrily concerned about his/her body image, talk to him or her about what may be behind these concerns. If your child stops eating or vomits to control his/her weight, seek medical advice immediately.
  5. If your child is gaining to much weight consult a physician and explore resources to help your child become more active.
  6. If your child is hiding food, your child may be upset about things in his/her life and it may be helpful to consult with a mental health professional.
